Cockfight, The Favorite Attraction Yet A Violation Against The Law

Tajen (cockfight) attractions are generally rooted and entrenched in Bali. It cannot be removed completely and can only be minimized as a tradition that can not be separated from religious ceremonies. However, because it is a major favorite attraction, Tajen is always present in the midst of the community although there is no ceremony. This habit is very difficult to be eradicated completely as it is part of Balinese entertainment for life.

Conservation of Tajen is identical to cultural preservation, but preservation efforts through the ceremony of “Tabuh Rah” is often abused by rogue elements that make Tajen attraction as a place full of business an element of gambling. This is what is forbidden by the government to protect the public from poverty, because it is believed gambling would only bring misery to the community, and therefore gambling is prohibited by law in Indonesia.

Tabuh Rah or Tajen in religious ceremonies does not act as a colossal event like often misused, but it is only one round of event purposed to get the chicken blood as a “Petabuh” (offering) which is believed to be a great purification for ceremony in Balinese Hinduism. However, religious ceremonies are used to deploy Tajen attractions for more than one round that ended with “gambling”. This is often causing problems for the controlling and enforcement officers.
Prohibition of excessive Tajen that shackles the entertainment-hungry society had made new breakthroughs; an event held clandestinely commonly called “Tajen branangan”. The existence of Tajen branangan is blooming almost everywhere in Bali which makes the officers busy. There are often rumors spreading of an affair between Tajen brokers with disciplinary officer, because generally the Tajen branangan do not obtain permission from the authorities. Permitted Tajen attractions held as they relate to religious ceremonies. It usually has a proclamation letter as its legal permit, and the number of rounds of fighting cock will remain limited. However, the fact remaining is that the event was held from morning to evening.
